So, there’s a light on in my VWs dash. I know, I know, big surprise. It’s the headlight light, and I get a message that says “check right light”. First off, which right? Facing the car, when I’m in the car? Why not say driver’s side or passenger side? Anyway. I check both lights, and they seem fine. Any VW owners have similar issues? Car is 2011 (mkvi) GTI.

I’ve had the lightbulb light on my mk5 on for like a year now. For the life of me I can’t find a burnt bulb anywhere. Chalking up to vw electronics.

You’re fucked.
Just leave the car in a ditch and walk away. That light is only the first of many that will happen in rapid succession, culminating in a bonfire orgy of repressed Teutonic rage.
Walk away while you still have the chance!

It would say low beam if it meant headlight, iirc from my mk6. Check your sidemarker lights.

As you sit in the car. For example, your
left
turn indicator is always on the
left
side of the car. Anything that is specifically “left” or “right” follows the same logic.

What Urambo said. As you sit in the car.

If memory serves correctly, ran into this on a Jetta a couple years ago, 2011-2012ish. Ended up being a bumper mounted side marker lamp. Also heard stories of inferior quality replacement bulbs not carrying the resistance the VW system was expecting, and triggering a malfunction indicator even though the bulbs were functioning.

If you don’t see the bulb out, it’s likely a false reading. Happens to me quite often in my MkV Jetta. It will say a light is out, but the light isn’t out.

Check city lights/parking lights/fog lights/sidemarkers/highbeams/brake lights/reverse lights/signals.
Hope this info helps.

Question: does your mkv burn through taillight bulbs at an alarming rate like my rabbit?
![]() 04/01/2016 at 15:59 |

I don’t seem to go through bulbs at a greater than normal rate. Just seem to get phantom warning lights. Surprising, I know.

I want to say something is wrong with my electrics, but we have established that these are VWs so that would be redundant.

Just a case of VW gonna VW, I guess.

(Wants to type “but it’s been reliable so far”, looks out window at car, realizes there’s not enough wood to knock on, finds ditch)

Of course, the issue won’t repeat itself. VW electronics....

That was me every time I said, “My MkIV Golf has over 200k miles and it’s still on the original clutch.” I can’t say that any more, though, because some f**king drunk totaled it Wednesday morning.

Yeah i saw that post, sorry to hear that. Mine got tagged last fall by a drunk who drove off, but i got the plate number (and they got to go to jail). Needed a new bumper and taillight was all, though.

Mine was a side marker light that I thought was a reflecter

Tow truck took it away today for the insurance to look at it. I’m sure it will be totaled. Yeah, I’m still pretty bummed about it.

So I know that this is an old comment, but three months later the car was traded in, as this was nearly exactly what happened. Damnit, Volkswagen.

I did not in any way intend for that snarky reply to be prophetic.
